Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is now focusing on implementing Starlink internet services in Sri Lanka after cancelling his scheduled visit to India. Musk’s decision comes after his recent trips to China and Indonesia, where he explored various business opportunities. During the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Musk met with Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss the potential of Starlink services in the island nation.
The President’s Media Division shared on social media platform X: “During the 10th World Water Forum High-Level Meeting in Indonesia, President Ranil Wickremesinghe met with @elonmusk to discuss the implementation of @Starlink in Sri Lanka.”
Sri Lankan Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, Jeevan Thondaman, also posted on X: “President @RW_UNP met with @elonmusk today during his 2-day visit to Bali with me for the World Water Forum. President and Elon discussed Sri Lanka’s recovery, economic potential, and new opportunities for investment.” Thondaman, who accompanied President Wickremesinghe to Indonesia, highlighted that bringing connectivity to remote communities could significantly improve access to education and economic opportunities.
Why Did Elon Musk Cancel His India Visit?
Elon Musk was originally scheduled to visit India from April 20 to April 22. However, the visit was cancelled at the last moment due to pressing Tesla obligations. Musk stated, “Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year.” According to a report by PTI, Musk has yet to finalize plans for Tesla and Starlink in India.
During his planned visit to India, Musk was expected to make significant announcements, including a potential $2-3 billion investment in an EV manufacturing facility and developments related to Starlink. He was also set to meet with executives from various startups in New Delhi and was awaiting government approvals to start Starlink satellite broadband services in the country.
The Future of Starlink in Sri Lanka
The discussions between Musk and President Wickremesinghe mark a significant step towards bringing Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet to Sri Lanka. By improving connectivity, Starlink aims to enhance access to education and economic opportunities, particularly in remote areas. This initiative aligns with Sri Lanka’s broader goals of economic recovery and development, offering new investment opportunities and technological advancements.
As Musk continues to explore new markets for Starlink, his engagements with leaders in Sri Lanka could pave the way for successful implementation of satellite internet services, helping bridge the digital divide and fostering economic growth.
