Elon Musk took to Twitter to share the news, stating, “Given the terrible flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, @Starlink will donate 1000 terminals to emergency responders and make usage for all terminals in the region free until the region has recovered. I hope the best for the people of Brazil.”
The catastrophic flooding has resulted in the loss of 107 lives so far, as emergency responders tirelessly work to rescue individuals trapped in inundated homes and communities. Roads have transformed into rivers, making access to affected areas extremely challenging.
One particularly heartwarming rescue effort involved the successful retrieval of a horse stranded on a rooftop for two days in a severely flooded town in Rio Grande do Sul. Despite the valiant efforts of responders, 136 individuals remain missing, underscoring the urgency and gravity of the situation.
Authorities have managed to rescue approximately 165,000 people from flooded areas using boats and helicopters. However, the threat looms large as weather forecasts predict further rainfall in the coming days, exacerbating the already dire conditions.
The devastating floods have wreaked havoc on infrastructure and bridges, disrupting essential services and leading to reports of looting in affected areas. The flood damage is estimated to be at least 19 billion reais ($3.68 billion), according to Governor Eduardo Leite.
