Lagunitas Brewing Company has announced the closure of its Chicago brewery and taproom this summer, relocating its brewing operations back to its original facility in Petaluma, California. This decision, confirmed by a company spokesperson, will take effect by early August and will impact the brewery and taproom located in the North Lawndale neighborhood.

Transition and Future Operations

While the Chicago brewery and taproom will be shutting down, Lagunitas plans to keep its adjacent warehouse in Chicago operational. This facility will continue to supply their popular beers to local bars, restaurants, and stores in the Chicago area.

“The changes were prompted by a need to future-proof the organization amid changing tides in the craft beverage industry,” stated Lagunitas. “The transition will allow for a more efficient and flexible supply chain, with a greater focus on innovation and the acceleration of more sustainable brewing practices.”

Impact on Employees

The closure will affect 86 employees. Lagunitas has ensured that some of these employees will have opportunities to work remotely or transfer to the California facility. Additionally, those remaining in Chicago through the closure will be offered “retention incentives” and severance packages, along with assistance in finding new employment.

“We are committed to managing this transition thoughtfully, smoothly, and with deep respect for our valued Chicago Lagunitas employees,” said Lagunitas spokesperson Sam Kennedy.

A Look Back

Lagunitas opened its Chicago brewery and taproom in 2014, making a significant mark on the local craft beer scene. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the taproom to shut down in March 2020. It briefly reopened in April 2023 before the announcement of its permanent closure.

Conclusion

The closure of Lagunitas Brewing Company’s Chicago brewery and taproom marks the end of a notable chapter in the company’s history. However, the focus on centralizing operations in California aims to enhance efficiency and support innovative and sustainable brewing practices, ensuring Lagunitas continues to thrive in the evolving craft beverage industry.
